On August 29, 2016, The Mercury News published an article, “BART Retail Plans Are Advancing” by Annie Sciacca.

The article shared that BART will be rolling out retail stores at its busy stations as early as winter of 2016. As we think about the new development and density in our transit nodes, retail will play an important role in meeting riders’ daily needs. Let us know what you’d like to see!

BART stations soon could be home to a slew of local and national businesses, including prospective tenants Ghirardelli Chocolates, Dunkin’ Donuts, Oakland retailer Oaklandish and others, as early as December.

Several years after BART entered into negotiations with developer TransMart to bring retail services inside its stations, the plans are finally advancing.

The goal, said TransMart CEO Alexis Wong, is “how do we make the experience of riding BART more interesting, pleasant and exciting.”

She thinks adding retail can help. While the plan is to eventually launch at least a small amount of retail in each station, the company will start with the most high-volume stations, Wong said. That includes stations in Oakland and downtown San Francisco.
