Why NUMMI’S Closure Could Be the Best Thing to Have Ever Happened to Fremont
The City of Fremont has been having a few good years. In fact, you could even say it’s reached its golden era with the construction of the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station and the City’s brand new Downtown underway.
So how did Fremont forge its path to success?
You might be surprised to hear that our answer would be the NUMMI disaster. With every setback comes a new opportunity to overcome and thrive – and Fremont did just that. Emerging from the wake of the NUMMI closure, the City got back on its feet, as tenacious and determined as ever.
For instance, we expect the new Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station will drastically enhance Fremont’s economy and quality of life. The City is well on its way to becoming a job-centric hub of the BART system. Plus, Fremont’s Downtown plan will transform the City from an auto-oriented suburban environment to an urban community that celebrates the local economy and embraces a major metropolitan city vibe. We envision a Downtown that serves as the City’s social heartbeat – where people can connect, communicate and celebrate.
They say that with the economy on the upswing, there’s no better time to act. You don’t have to tell us twice. Here are just a few of Fremont’s recent big moves as of late:
- The City has established a public-private partnership with Prologis, the landowner of Pacific Commons – a regional shopping center in South Fremont. And Pacific Commons is not your typical shopping center – it’s an economic powerhouse for Fremont, serving the entire region.
- Over the last several years we have grown to 80 companies in the life sciences sector including Healthcare Equipment, Medical Devices, Life Science Tools and Diagnostics, and Biopharmaceuticals. This is one of the largest concentrations in the East Bay.
- We’ve seen a considerable increase in revenue, thanks in part to Pacific Commons, which will soon be expanding The Block – a shopping and entertainment sub-district – and Fremont’s Auto Mall, which is one of the most successful in the state.
- Tesla, arguably one of the biggest tech success stories of the year, has planted its flag in Fremont, replacing NUMMI.
Plus, there’s a reason we were ranked 5th Best Run City in America this year. Fremont has remarkable leadership in its management and City Council with a sense of vision that’s steadfast and unique for politicians. We’re willing to take the risks and commit to something big, while staying true to our core principles and choosing what is right for the community.
From NUMMI to Tesla and Solyndra to Seagate, we’re coming back even stronger than before. Keep your eye on Fremont. There are big things happening.
