"Reshore Your IT" a Bumper Sticker Revolution in Fremont!
We’ve talked a lot about the reshoring of manufacturing on this blog. But how about IT? Planet Magpie, a Fremont-based IT consulting firm is trying to start this conversation using a decidedly un-cloud-like tool — the bumper sticker.
With the statement “Create American Jobs: Reshore Your IT”, the company, an outspoken supporter of keeping IT in the U.S, is making an effort to extend the debate offline. Planet Magpie’s Feburary 28, 2014 blog post “Bumper Stickers Supporting ‘Reshoring’ Appear in Silicon Valley” starts below.
Manufacturing is Coming Home. But Are IT Services?
In the past few years, the U.S. has begun to reshore certain manufacturing operations more and more. However, IT jobs like building software and providing technical support have been slower to come back to America. Do a search for “reshoring IT jobs” and you’ll find discussion online, including a 2012 Planet Magpie white paper called, “The Argument for Reshoring IT” which deconstructs the ‘benefits’ of sending IT services, such as software development and support, offshore.
Using Your Car to Start an IT Discussion?
Bumper stickers seemed like one good way to get people talking.
“If you talk to a lot of people here in Silicon Valley, you’ll find that many have strong opinions against businesses going offshore, but they don’t feel comfortable expressing those opinions.” explains Doreyne. We figured a bumper sticker was an easy way to show support for reshoring and rebuilding America’s IT workforce.”
And what better place to make people aware of IT issues, than in Silicon Valley?
